The current impasse with the informal exports of cattle and other commodities into Peten, Guatemala, unless resolved, will cause a fundamental impact on our domestic food security. In order to understand the reason for this informal trade, a review of the Partial Scope Agreement with Guatemala is important. The Directorate of Foreign Trade has released this publication (click image to the right to read) that outlines the details of the Partial Scope Agreement with Guatemala, and the intent of the joint Administrative Commission (Page 4-5).

In principle we ought to be able to formally export these commodities to Guatemala, but the difficulties in getting the executive agencies in Guatemala to implement the Administrative processes as agreed in the PSA has led to the informal work-around that has been tolerated by both sides.

The Covid19 Pandemic has brought many issues into focus that successive governments has been battling for decades!
